The water distribution system is comprised of over 34 miles of water main, the largest of which is 12 inches in diameter.
System flushing takes place two times each year during the months of April and October. Notices are published in the newspaper one week prior to flushing and the week of flushing. A notice is also sent through the City's "Notify Me" service. For assistance on how to fill out the notify me features, click here. Users may experience discolored water during system flushing. This discoloration is caused by minerals that are found naturally in the ground water and builds in the water lines over time. System wide flushing is completed primarily to remove this natural buildup from the water main. If discoloration is observed at any time, run the water for five minutes (preferably through a fixture without a screen, such as a bathtub). Should the condition persist, please contact the Public Works Department at (586)727-7575.
